The real and very familiar Yellow Pages. Anything else could be a fraud, warns the BBB.

Warnings have been issued against Yellow Page Editions, otherwise known as YPE, for fraudulent billing. According to the Better Business Bureau of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky, the potentially fraudulent  billings are being issued by YPE to local businesses.

In a statement, the BBB noted that YPE is “not the real Yellow Pages” but looks very similar .

Yellow Page Editions contacts local businesses to confirm basic information with yes/no answers under the pretext of a yellow page or similar directory listing. The information is entered into a telephone agreement confirming the order of business listings.

What to do if you receive a fraudulent billing:

  1. Send a certified letter to the sender stating you never ordered or authorized the listings/service
  2. Ask the company to “cease and desist” billing and any further contact

To avoid tripping into this scheme, the BBB advises:

  1. Verify the caller’s company name, address and phone number and verify with the BBB before divulging information.
  2. Be aware of the potential for fraud in the form of billing, phone calls and solicitations.
  3. Do not depend on caller ID. New technology allows individuals and scammers to “spoof” the name and number that appears on your screen.
  4. Review invoices carefully and channel them through one person in your department or company.
