The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement calling for a high heat index through 7 p.m. tonight.

Afternoon heat indexes will reach 103-105 degrees today across Middle Tennessee.

A strong ridge of high pressure begins to develop today across the midstate and temperatures will be on the increase. The combination of heat and humidity will allow heat index values to reach as high as 105 in western portions of the state.

If you must be outdoors, take the necessary precautions to protect yourself from the heat. Wear light-colored clothing and drink plenty of water. Check on elderly neighbors and do not leave children unattended inside a vehicle for any length of time.

This heat is expected to persist through the weekend and into next week.
