Congressman Tom Reed, (R.-N.Y.) is trying to make sure that should a government shutdown happen, seniors and veterans are taken care of.
During a media conference on Monday, Reed said that he has introduced legislation called the “Pay Our Veterans and Seniors First Act”. The act does exactly what it sounds like: in the event of a government shutdown, it would ensure that veterans and seniors are paid before anyone else.
“That would require, under my proposed legislation, that we in Congress, and the President, and the Executive staff, go without pay and make sure that our veterans and seniors are paid first. “To me that’s only right. It is the appropriate thing for us to do, and I’m essentially hoping for the best, as we work through the September 30th deadline, but preparing for the worst,” said Reed.
Reed says that if a compromise is reached to keep the government open before September 30th, then his bill would be moot.
