LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES, KY/TN : Children’s Day on the Farm is Saturday, May 30, at The Homeplace 1850’s Farm in Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area. From 1-4 p.m., children can step back-in-time and do farm chores typical for children in the 1850s. Homeplace admission is $5 ages 13 and up, $3 ages 5-12, and free for ages 4 and under.

Children will learn the importance of doing chores on an 1850’s farm like making a bed, weaving, and attending an 1850’s school at 1, 2, and 3 p.m.. They can also learn how to work mules and oxen at teamster training. Children earn credits for their hard work that can be used at the Children’s Day General Store for 1850’s-type goodies or to play with 1850’s-style games and toys.

“Farm children worked alongside their parents to help raise crops and livestock for the family’s use,” said Cindy Earls, Lead Interpreter. “Animals, animal products, corn and tobacco crops farm families had, would often be sold to the local general store or traded with neighbors. Children’s Day helps today’s children understand how farm children lived in the 1850s.”

The Homeplace is located in the Tennessee portion of Land Between The Lakes. Pack a picnic lunch, bring a camera, and enjoy a day of fun and discovery! Activities are for all ages. Many activities will be geared towards children ages 5-12 and home educators.

Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area manages more than 170,000 acres in western Kentucky and Tennessee as part of the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Agriculture?s public lands program. Land Between The Lakes offers outdoor recreation, lake access, land management, and environmental education to over 1.4 million visitors annually. The Friends of Land Between The Lakes works in partnership with the Forest Service providing program services, funds development, and volunteer support.
