Thirteen years after their first of three deployments to Afghanistan, part of the 101st Airborne Division 3rd Brigade “Rakkasans” of the 101st Airborne Division’s 3rd Brigade are scheduled to return to Afghanistan for fourth time. Their nine-month deployment is for what is described as a non-combat mission.

The Rakkasans are heading out with the intent of training Afghanistan’s security force leaders since the U.S. is not longer involved in an active combat scenario in that country.

The Rakkasan colors were “cased” Wednesday prior to deployment. This 4th deployment was supposed to include 1,000 troops but has been reduced to 600. It was also suposed to happen in September, 2014, but was delayed until now.

Some 100,000 troops were in Afghanistan in 2011; that number bow stands at 38,000. By the end of this year only 10,000 will remain.
