Henry County’s Allegro Fine Foods has been recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) for its food safety practices. The company was certified in two GFSI standards-Safe Quality Food (SQF) 2000 and the International Food Standard (IFS) Version 5.

These certifications ensure that the company’s food safety and quality management system complies with international and domestic food safety regulations. This enables suppliers to help assure their customers that food has been produced, processed, prepared, and handled according to the highest possible standards, at all levels of the supply chain.

In addition to these certifications, Allegro is also expanding its production and warehouse operations by 30,000 square feet and will add a third shift, creating additional jobs in Henry County.

TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely

Memphis is home to the world’s busiest cargo airport, fourth largest inland port, five Class I railroads and several major interstates and highways, the movement of freight into and out of Memphis is a multi-billion dollar industry.  On Thursday, July 8 at 1:00 p.m. CT, Tennessee will be one of three states to host the national release of a critical new national report on the state of America’s freight transportation system.  Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely will join Arkansas State Highways and Transportation Department Director Dan Flowers and numerous local and state officials and industry representatives to release the new report Unlocking Freight.

Unlocking Freight, the new report from the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials, examines America’s freight system, our highways, ports, railroads and airports, and the need for critical improvements.  The event will be held near the world’s busiest cargo airport, Memphis International Airport, to emphasize the importance of freight movement to the Tri-State area and the opportunity for investment. The report release will be performed at Wilson Air, Winchester Road, Memphis, Tennessee 38118.

Attending will be state, local and industry officials including TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely, Arkansas State Highways and Transportation Department Director Dan Flowers, Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton, Jr., Shelby County Mayor Joe Ford, Memphis Greater Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President Dexter Muller, Port of Memphis Executive Director Randy Richardson, RJ Corman Railroad Chairman Fred Mudge, along with representatives from Mississippi Department of Transportation, Memphis International Airport, Tennessee Trucking Association, Tombigbee Waterway and Norfolk Southern Railroad.

While current food stamp recipients are eligible for the federal benefit to replace food lost in the floodwater or because of power outages, even those not currently receiving food stamp benefits can get a one-time benefit.
Recipients must meet low income requirements and live in counties declared disaster areas. Those who have also registered for FEMA help are eligible for a one-time cash payment of $250 through the Department of Human Services.

Applicants for the emergency food stamps and cash assistance must apply in person at a county’s Department of Human Services office or at the FEMA disaster center at Pageant Lane in Clarksville.

Deceptive blue skies at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Health Department belie the situation unfolding downtown.

The Montgomery County Health Department has free Tetanus and Hepatitis A vaccines available for anyone who was involved in water related rescue and evacuation activities.

The Tennessee State Heath Department was listed as one of the Nashville locations closed Wednesday due to situations brought on by the epic flooding in Nashville, limiting public health information. The Tennessee Government Health Department in Nashville is slated to reopen on Thursday per TEMA’s website. However, the CDC has the following information regarding flood health and safety during cleanup.

Flood water cleanup

Before you start cleaning your home after a flood, the flood water in the Clarksville area contains sewage from the submerged waste water treatment plant. Protect yourself and your loved ones by following these precautions:

• Keep children and pets out of the affected area until cleanup has been completed.
• Wear rubber boots, rubber gloves, and goggles during cleanup of affected area.
• Remove and discard items that cannot be washed and disinfected (such as, mattresses, carpeting, carpet padding, rugs, upholstered furniture, cosmetics, stuffed animals, baby toys, pillows, foam-rubber items, books, wall coverings, and most paper products).
• Remove and discard drywall and insulation that has been contaminated with sewage or flood waters.
• Thoroughly clean all hard surfaces (such as flooring, concrete, molding, wood and metal furniture, counter-tops, appliances, sinks, and other plumbing fixtures) with hot water and laundry or dish detergent
• Avoid musculoskeletal injuries by utilizing teams of two or greater to move heavy objects; avoid lifting more than fifty pounds by yourself.
• Stay cool and hydrated in the heat during clean-up and wear loose fitting, light-colored clothing.
• As soon as access to the flooded building has been allowed, have the building certified as safe for reentry by a building inspector or other government authority.
• Clean up and dry the building within 24-48 hours and give yourself proper ventilation by opening doors and windows. Throw away any upholstered item that cannot be dried out quickly and toys like stuffed bears due to mold. Remove mold by mixing a solution of 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water; wear rubber gloves when cleaning mold.
• Wash all clothes worn during the cleanup in hot water and detergent. These clothes should be washed separately from uncontaminated clothes and linens.
• Wash clothes contaminated with flood or sewage water in hot water and detergent. It is recommended that a laundromat be used for washing large quantities of clothes and linens until your on-site waste-water system has been professionally inspected and serviced.
• Throw away canned food that is bulging or open, and wash canned goods after removing the label with a bleach washing; relabel cans individually with sharpie markers with the kind of food and the expiration date.
• Make sure well water is not cloudy or contaminated. Please be aware that treating water with iodine tablets, chlorine tablets or liquid bleach will not kill all the parasites in contaminated water; boiling the water or appropriate filtration is required.
• If your city or municipality’s water supply has been contaminated, boil water by bringing it to a rolling boil for at least one minute. Allow the water to cool effectively before drinking. If boiling is unavailable, and the water source is cloudy, then strain the water via a clean cloth or coffee filter before boiling as contaminants frequently attach to water particles. Also, unscented laundry bleach (at the rate of 1/8 teaspoon per 1 gallon of water) provides some treatment when mixed well; wait thirty minutes before drinking.
• The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation can assist well owners with well disinfection information. Call toll-free at 1-(888)-891-TDEC (8332) or view their website
• Help the drying process by using fans, air conditioning units, and dehumidifiers.
• After completing the cleanup, wash your hands with soap and warm water. Use water that has been boiled for 1 minute (allow the water to cool before washing your hands).
• Y0u may also use water that has been disinfected for personal hygiene use (solution of 1/8 teaspoon [~0.75 milliliters] of household bleach per 1 gallon of water). Let it stand for 30 minutes. If the water is cloudy, use a solution of ¼ teaspoon (~1.5 milliliters) of household bleach per 1 gallon of water.
• Have your on-site waste-water system professionally inspected and serviced if you suspect damage.
• If you have been exposed to flood waters, consult a doctor as soon as possible in regards to Tetanus shots and Hepatitis A/B shots. Get treatment for open wounds that have been exposed to flood waters.
• Seek immediate medical attention if you become injured or ill. Be careful to pace yourself and be aware of exhaustion from physical and emotional strains. Setup orders of priority for cleanup tasks. Ask friends, family, or professionals for help and seek professional help if necessary.

Proceed with caution

Flood waters in Montgomery county in all likelihood may contain potentially dangerous materials, such as fecal material from the overflowing sewage systems, agricultural runoff, or chemicals from industrial areas. Wading in flood waters can also be a cause of infection or result in a variety of injuries. Be alert for snakes and water moccasins and do not engage stray animals in the flood zone. Call local authorities to handle animals on the loose to avoid rabies exposure. Use DEET or Picaridin based insect repellents and wear long pants, long socks, and long-sleeved shirts to prevent mosquito bites.

In addition, beware of chemical and hazardous materials in flood waters as well as possible electrical and fire hazards. Wash skin that comes into contact with any hazardous material and consult the local authorities in regards to how to handle disposing of such materials. NEVER touch a downed power line and call the local department of electricity to report fallen power lines. Do not turn the power back on until after a qualified electrician has inspected the structure. If electrical equipment or circuits have gotten wet or are submerged, turn the power off at the main fuse / breaker first, if accessible.

The marina shares the elevated water levels as well. The Canada Geese are very agitated about their feeding grounds but pay no attention to their human observers watching the spectacle of their of tuft battles. The ramp to the marina store is augmented with a secondary level ramp to keep feet dry and out of the rising water. Beyond that, one would scarcely notice anything out of the ordinary at the marina.

Paris, Tennessee didn’t let the threat of harsh weather and rain dampen their spirits as the Jaycees executed their game plan and launched the 57th Annual Fish Fry. Billed as the World’s Biggest Fish Fry, the annual festival serves as the official opening event of West Tennessee’s festival season. With beauty pageants galore already completed, the week of April 17-24 saw the town of Paris put on its party face and welcome guests from far and wide.

The festival grounds opened Wednesday at the Paris Fairgrounds to record attendance  as people flocked to carnival rides, hush puppy eating contests, arts and crafts vendor booths and country dances. Thursday saw the Hush Puppy 5K Run/Walk and the opening of the IPRA Rodeo. But the heart of the festival is, after all, the catfish diners which are served for four days in the big dinning hall. The catfish was ready and waiting and the prep crews were all limbered up. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday saw attendance records fall as visitors flocked to the events around town and at the fairgrounds proper.

Despite the predication of harsh weather, Saturday’s  festival marched on with its schedule, rides operating in between bands of heavy rain. Having successfully held its Grand Parade on Friday morning with Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey participating, Saturday’s Little Tykes parade was set to go. Following the assembly of pulled wagons and carts and mini-floats, the fabled and infamous Catfish Races on the Square proved to be equally fascinating and beguiling. The tall tales spun would curl the hair!

After the races, Saturday’s main event was the carnival at the fairgrounds and the big dinning hall. The dinning hall was festooned with hundreds of celebratory posters created by elementary school students. These colorful and fanciful works of art showcased a wide diversity of style and theme as they focused on the fish fry and the celebrated catfish.

The Jaycees operations crew proved themselves once again up to the task of preparing and serving over two hundred fifty dinners an hour. Each dinner guest was greeted with golden fillets of fish nestled next to coleslaw, hush puppies and french fries.

Souvenirs of the festival  proclaimed this year’s event as the 57th annual production of the fish fry. And fear not, Tatter’s Ball of Foil has indeed grown another three inches in girth. All of Paris, Henry County and the Jaycees extends heartfelt thanks their new friends for their support and invite everyone to return for the 58th production of the World’s Biggest Fish Fry next April. They’ve already submitted their weather request for clear skies, just to be on the safe side!

Ramsey used the opportunity to speak about his background and career as a small business owner, and present the issues that are key to his campaign. He noted that he was the first Republican speaker in the State House of Representatives in 140 years and the longest serving Republican Lieutenant Governor in state history.

As he introduced himself, Ramsey noted bluntly that he is a Christian conservative. Among the issues he discussed with voters:

• Health care: Ramsey opposes the recently passed national health care reform bill, citing his displeasure with an unfunded mandate requiring individuals to purchase a product, i.e., health insurance. “I will do everything I can to fight it,” he said. He noted that Cover Tennessee is one option for providing health care to individuals and small business, and added that the creation of insurance pools is one way to decrease the cost of health care to small businesses.
• Planned Parenthood: Ramsey supported to elimination of funding in its entirety ($1.2 million) for Planned Parenthood in the state of Tennessee. “Tennessee is a right to life state,” he noted.
• Civil Unions: Ramsey advocated marriage as a contract between “one man and one woman.”
• Carry permits for guns: Ramsey noted his satisfaction with the passage of firearms legislation allowing concealed weapons to be carried by licensed gun owners.

In wrapping up his regional tour, Ramsey stated that “Washington is out of control; they are spending and borrowing too much, and not listening to the people.”

As governor, he said, he would bring common sense and conservatism to the state.

‘Celebrate Scouting’ stamp unveiled

In Washington, D.C., the U.S. Postal Service is honoring the scouts with their own “Celebrate Scouting stamp, which will be sold in the summer of 2010, coincides with the Boy Scouts of America?s 100th anniversary.
The new stamp design was created by illustrator Craig Frazier of Mill Valley, California, and depicts the spirit and outdoor adventure of scouting through a backpacking scout and a large silhouette of a scout surveying the landscape.
Since the creation of the international youth scouting movement some 100 years ago, hundreds of millions of children have benefited from opportunities for adventure, skill building, leadership, personal development, and community service provided by scouting organizations.

“I’m very proud to represent the United States Postal Service as we unveil the artwork for the scouting commemorative stamp to be released in 2010 and to recognize what scouting has done for boys and girls alike for more than 100 years,” said USPS Sustainability Vice President, Samuel M. Pulcrano. “I learned a great many things from scouting when I was a boy, and many of those lessons came from my father who served as my assistant scoutmaster. The experience made such an impression on me that I now serve as assistant scoutmaster for my son’s troop.”

Are you an educator interested in planning a field trip to experience the Land Between The Lakes (LBL) ‘outdoor classroom’?  If so, don’t miss out on LBL’s Educational Field Trip Grant for the 2010-2011 school year.  The deadline for the field trip grant application is April 30.

LBL’s Educational Field Trip Grant is available to public school districts within 100 miles of LBL.  The grant assists schools in covering costs for transportation, facility admission fees, program costs, and dorm rental during the 2010-2011 school year.  The grant amount awarded to schools is based on the school’s matching funds and number of students and LBL programs in which the school participates.

LBL programs are designed to support the Kentucky and Tennessee State K-12 curriculum guidelines for science, social studies, and arts and humanities.

“The Colors of Charpentier” will be presented by Dr. Korre Foster, Assistant Professor of Music, at 3 p.m. at the APSU Library.

Dr. Korre Foster, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities, will outline the compositional style of Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1634-1704), a French Baroque composer known for “breaking the rules.” Charpentier’s music is full of distinct melodic and harmonic colors setting his music apart from the other Baroque composers. The presentation will demonstrate these colors by looking at Charpentier’s work Messe pour Monsieur Mauroy.

The purpose of the Library Athenaeum is to host events that promote and enhance the intellectual life of the University and the community.   These events may include presentations, lectures, panel discussions, debates, artistic performances, readings, and other educational experiences.   Presenters may be current and retired faculty members, administrators, staff, students, alumni, and community members.

Tutu’s visit to Murray is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at 7 p.m., in Murray State’s Regional Special Events Center. Previous series speakers include Richard Norton Smith, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Benazir Bhutto, Lech Walesa and F.W. deKlerk. This lecture series provides this region’s population with an unusual opportunity to come face-to-face with world leaders. The lecture is free and open to all.

As the issue of apartheid intensified, Tutu became heavily embroiled in the controversy, speaking out against the injustices of the system. For several years he was denied a passport to travel abroad. He became a prominent leader in the crusade for justice and racial conciliation in South Africa, and received a Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to that cause in 1984.

A retired Archbishop of Cape Town, Tutu was granted the honorary title of Archbishop Emeritus in 1996. In recent years, he has turned his attention to a different cause – the campaign against HIV/AIDS. The archbishop has made appearances around the globe to help raise awareness of the disease and its tragic consequences in human lives.

Biofuels facility saved from bankruptcy in Wisconsin

From South Wisconsin comes news of Valero Renewable Fuels acquiring a biofuels plant facility for $72 million dollars. The facility is an ethanol plant located in Jefferson. The plant had been in business for six years and had a production capacity of 110 million gallons per year (mgy). When Renew Energy filed for bankruptcy, seventy employees were faced with possible unemployment if a buyer could not be found.

After battling with three other competitors, Valero emerged with the winning bid. With this purchase, Valero boosts its plant portfolio total to ten ethanol plants with a combined production capacity of 1.1 billion gallons per year (bgy). Valero distinguishes itself now as one of the nation’s largest ethanol producers.

Ethanol Demo plant opens in Tennessee

Tennessee increased its imprint on the green energy marketplace with the opening of one of the world’s first cellulosic ethanol demonstration facilities. The demonstration plant is located in Vonore and opened with a ribbon-cutting affair and a tour of the74,000 square foot plant.

Guests numbering in the hundreds gathered to witness the opening of the demonstration refinery, the result of a partnership between Genera Energy and Du Pont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol (DDCE). The facility has a production capacity of producing 250,000 gallons of ethanol per year by converting switchgrass and corncobs to ethanol.

President and CEO Joe Skurla said the opening of the plant is a big step towards developing alternative fuels. When commercial production gets underway utilizing technology developed at the plant, Skurla projected that the U.S. could be generating 16 billion gallons of biofuel per year by 2022. At this stage of development, 25,000 gallon tanks are being utilized, but full-scale production could result in implementing million-gallon capacity tanks.

The ethanol creation process requires the switchgrass to first be pre-treated and then for sacrification to occur-(the process of producing sugars from starch). This is followed by fermentation, distillation and filtering.  Kyle Althoff, director of feedstock development for DDCE, characterized the process as operating as across between oil refinery and an alcohol distillery.

GM joins reduced carbon footprint in supporting bio-fuels industry

First it was Ford, then it was Chrysler. Now General Motors is joining the reduced carbon footprint with its support of the bio-fuels industry.  General Motors has created a new Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel engine that can utilize a twenty percent biodiesel fuel. The new engine will power the 2011 heavy-duty models such as the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra pick-up trucks, Chevrolet Express and GMC Savanna vans. Chevrolet is expected to unveil its 2011 Silverado truck line at the upcoming Chicago Auto Show.

‘B20 capability in our new heavy-duty trucks is the latest edition to a growing number of alternative fuel options offered by General Motors. We are seeking different paths to fuel solutions in order to maximize efficiency, reduce emissions and minimize the dependence on petroleum,’ said Mile Robinson, VP of Environment, Energy and Safety Policy.

Modifications to the Duramax and its fuel system compatible with B20, General Motors upgraded some seals and gasket materials, upgraded fuel filters and added additional heating to the fuel circuit. This development by General Motors comes after Chrysler began supporting use of B20 in its 2007 vehicles. Chrysler was then followed by Ford. Combined, the three companies currently manufacture over eighty percent of the bio-diesel blend-friendly vehicles sold in the U.S.

The Friends of Cherokee State Resort Park along with local and state government officials and Kentucky State Tourism and Parks officials marked the completion of the renovation of Cherokee State Resort Park’s dining hall with a festive celebration on January 18. Noting the significance of celebrating renovation on the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, government officials from state Rep. Will Coursey to Deputy Secretary of Tourism, from Arts & Heritage Lindy Casebier to Marshall County Judge Executive Mike Miller praised the efforts of private citizens and political entities alike for the completion of the dining hall renovation. The dining hall renovation marks the first phase of the park’s complete renovation and restoration.

Kentucky Heritage Council Commendation hailing Cherokee Resort Park being named to the National Register of Historic Places by the U. S. Dept. of Interior

Friends of Cherokee State Resort Park is a group of private citizens dedicated to the preservation, restoration and renovation of the only Kentucky state park that accommodated  its African American citizens in the segregated 1950s and ’60s. Their efforts have been recognized as being pivotal in preserving this symbol of Kentucky’s African American heritage. Similar park friends groups have been formed for several of the state’s many resort parks. These citizens groups work for the betterment, preservation and promotion of their chosen state parks.

As a result of the Cherokee Park Friends efforts and the history, records and background research of Dr. Nancy Dawson, professor of African American Studies, the park has been designated a Kentucky landmark by the Kentucky Heritage Council. The council also has issued a commendation noting that the park has been named to National Register of Historic Places by the U. S. Department of the Interior.

Kentucky has committed over two million dollars to the rehabilitation and renovation of the park. The renovation of the park’s dining hall was budgeted at $600,000 dollars.These actions support the group’s efforts to have the park restored to its full former glory and take its rightful place in Kentucky’s collection of outstanding state resort parks. African American Studies professor, Dr. Nancy Dawson

Dawson coordinated the efforts of the Friends of Cherokee Resort Park and spearheaded research into the history and story of the park. Dawson was recently honored by the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program by having her original historical narrative, “Stories From Da Dirt,” recognized by the UGRRNTF and added to its litany of programs and research. Dawson’s play documents the history and legacy of slavery and slaves efforts to gain their freedom and purchase the American ideal during and after the Civil War and the many battles in which they participated or affected. The historic narrative drama made its debut this past summer at Fort Donelson National Park in Dover, Tennessee . The play was performed by a cast of students and professional stage actors handpicked by Dawson herself.

Private citizens gave testimonials to the legacy of the park and the many memories shared to its impact and their devotion to the only vacation spot African Americans could utilize in a segregated American. The descendants of some of the staff of the park also spoke and presented a photo of their family members, recounting their pride and dedication to the upkeep and operation of the park.

Jacob White, Manager, Cherokee State Resort Park

Pictograph displays document the heyday of the park and renovation progress of the dining hall. Personal memorabilia from family photo albums have been donated to help establish a pictorial history of the splendor and wonder enjoyed by the park’s many visitors during its many years of operation. Jacob White spoke of his memories as manager of the park and expressed hope that the citizens focus group gatherings would result in preserving Cherokee and expanding its cope of operation for future generations. He stressed that the park’s history should not be glossed over or forgotten. Five focus gatherings are planned across the state to gather citizen input on the future of the park.

Keynote speaker for the re-dedication was  Colia Clark, renown SNCC activist and assistant to NAACP Mississippi organizer Medgar Evers. Clark spoke of the significance of Cherokee’s unique place in the history of Kentucky’s  story and its Civil Rights Movement. She noted the lamentable past which had made Cherokee necessary and how the people made Cherokee a place of refuge, enjoyment and discovery on the shores of beautiful Kentucky Lake, away from the harsh reality of a segregated Kentucky. She noted that it is important to remember and preserve this symbol of a darker past, not to berate or embarrass but to celebrate the joy and wonder that was paramount to those who made their way to its wooded trails and campsites and cabins. The push forward must pay homage to its past, acknowledging both its good and bad points, White said.

“Cherokee has a special place in Kentucky’s history and the heart of its people. It must be a place that welcomes all. But it must speak to its unique past boldly and clearly. That past must not be smoothed or glossed over. It must not be made light. Understanding what made a place like Cherokee necessary is essential to the healing and progress that is yet to come. ” These citizens town halls must acknowledge this truth. Only then can a revitalized vision be created for Cherokee to carry it forth into the 21st century and beyond.

Clark urged the board and those attending the celebration to consider establishing a gardening club at the park. Adults could mentor youth in the ways of raising food and becoming attuned to nature as was done in those days of separation and segregation. Not everything about those times was negative. Because universal medical care was not yet even a dream in the distant future, people regularly grew their own food and followed homeopathic medicine. Knowing what plants could be used to treat ailments was common practice. Growing one’s own food has always made for a more grounded personality, no matter the economic situation of the nation. Add to that the benefit of adults mentoring young people. For children in single-parent homes or at-risk youth, this opportunity for positive, adult connection and direction can be invaluable. Particular effort must be made to encourage Black men to mentor or team up with young Black males as role models and mentors. That proverb is true, “It does take a village to raise a child.”

I-40 in Metropolitan Knoxville area

NASHVILLE, TN: At 455 miles in length, Tennessee is home to the longest stretch of Interstate 40 in nation and, for the fourth straight year, the nation’s truckers have rated it the best stretch of roadway in America.  In addition, truck drivers rated Tennessee’s overall roadway system third best in the country for the eleventh year in a row according to a recent survey of truck owners and operators by Overdrive Magazine.

“Tennessee’s roadways are a major economic asset in our work to attract opportunities for growth and development in our communities,” said Governor Phil Bredesen.  “I’m pleased to see this consistently high ranking of the state’s transportation system from some of the people who use it the most – our nation’s truckers.”

Overdrive Magazine polls more than 300 truck drivers across the nation each year asking them to rate the nation’s roads and drivers, state by state.  The survey includes opinions about the quality of the roads, the smoothness of the riding surface, road markings, construction detour availability and more.   Overdrive Magazine began surveying truck drivers across the nation 13 years ago.

Trucker Stan Bloom from Grimes, Iowa told the magazine he’s driven I-40 in Tennessee more than 40 times, “It’s a pleasant drive through there. The road surface is good and they use a lot of blacktop. They keep it up well.”

Tennessee’s roads are consistently ranked as some of the best by the nation’s truckers and by the Asphalt Pavement Alliance, who have awarded seven Perpetual Pavement Awards to TDOT, the most awarded to any other state except Minnesota.

“For more than a decade the nation’s truckers have ranked Tennessee roadways among the best in the country,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely.  “This speaks volumes about the commitment to quality from TDOT employees and contractors. The strong support from the Governor, the Tennessee General Assembly, our local government partners and the citizens of our state also contributes to our quality roadway system.”

“This is another great honor for TDOT and for the contractors who help build and maintain our roadways,” added TDOT Chief Engineer Paul Degges.  “But we cannot rest on our past work. We must continue to look for more ways to improve not just our roadways but our entire transportation system.”

Law enforcement will work overtime to crack down on drunk drivers

The Tennessee Department of Transportation Governor’s Highway Safety Office, Tennessee Titans and Tennessee Department of Safety are once again teaming up to remind Tennessee football fans that real Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk this Super Bowl weekend.

Thousands of Titans fans stepped up this season to keep roadways safe.  More than 6,000 Titans fans promised to be the designated driver for friends and family during the season, making the Titans the top team in the AFC South for designated driver pledges.  Today, the Titans, TDOT’s GHSO and the Department of Safety honored some of those designated drivers with an exclusive tour of LP Field.

“In addition to supporting the Titans this past football season, these fans made a very important commitment – one that saves lives. By pledging to be a designated driver, they made sure their friends and family had a safe ride home from LP Field and did their part to keep Tennessee roads free of impaired drivers.” – GHSO Director Kendell Poole

Titans fans joined more than 150,000 NFL fans in the Designated Driver program, which is a collaboration among all 32 NFL teams, 31 stadiums, concessionaires, beer distributors and brewers, broadcasters, law enforcement agencies, and traffic safety experts.

“We’re proud of our fans’ dedication to responsible behavior this season and we want all football fans to follow their leadership this weekend,” added Don MacLachlan, Titans Executive Vice President of Administration and Facilities. “Handing your keys to a sober driver or taking a cab will always make you a winner.”

“The careless actions of a drunk driver can turn a Super Bowl celebration into a tragedy,” said Department of Safety Commissioner Dave Mitchell. “When Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk, all Tennesseans come out winners.”

According to the Department of Safety, Troopers arrested 46 people for driving under the influence during the 2009 Super Bowl weekend.  Between Friday, January 30, and Sunday, February 1 at 11:59 p.m. there were 6 people killed on Tennessee roadways.  Two of those deaths occurred in alcohol related crashes.  That’s down significantly from 2008 when there were 14 fatal crashes during the Super Bowl weekend.

“Our game plan is to take as many impaired drivers off the road before they take a life on our roadways,” added THP Colonel Mike Walker. “Troopers will be out in force to make sure everyone has a safe Super Bowl weekend.”

“We want everyone to make the right call for the Super Bowl by passing their keys to a sober driver,” added Poole.  “If you’re hosting a party, make sure your celebration doesn’t end in tragedy. Designate a sober driver and have phone numbers for local taxi services on hand for those who’ve had too much to drink.”

Tennessee Department of Transportation crews will once again close a short section of Interstate 440 in Nashville this weekend as a major concrete rehabilitation project continues. Contract crews will close I-440 Eastbound from the Interstate 40 junction on the west side of Nashville to the Interstate 65 junction at 8:00 p.m. on  February 5.  and willl reopen that section of highway no later than 6:00 a.m. February 8.

TDOT will use its many overhead message boards across the city to direct motorists around the closure. Several portable message boards will also be placed at strategic points on Nashville interstates to alert drivers of detour routes.  Most of the traffic will be diverted to Interstate 40 through downtown Nashville. In addition, information on the closures will be broadcast on the TDOT SmartWay Highway Advisory Radio station (1680 AM) and on 511.

During the closures, crews will use cranes to lift 10 steel bridge beams, each weighing up to 60,000 pounds, across White Bridge Road and onto the large piers located on the east side of the interchange. In addition to the lane closures that will be in place, there will be several rolling roadblocks in both directions of White Bridge Road while the beams are lifted across the travel lanes.

The lane closures on White Bridge Road at I-40 will have significant impacts to the nearby intersection with Charlotte Pike (US 70). Motorists are urged to use alternate routes around this area if at all possible as long delays are expected.

Motorists traveling on I-40 East and wishing to access White Bridge Road or Briley Parkway will need to exit at 51st Avenue (Exit #205), located a quarter mile east of White Bridge Road. Detour signs will be posted to direct motorists back to White Bridge Road & Briley Parkway. TDOT will also use overhead and portable message boards along I-40 East to alert motorists of the closures. In addition, information on the closures will be broadcast on the and on 511.

This interchange modification project will help improve traffic flow for motorists traveling eastbound I-40 to Briley Parkway and from Briley Parkway to westbound I-40. The $32 million project is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and is schedule to be complete in August 2011.

As the final days of the Yousef Karsh Photographic Portraiture exhibit drew to a close, a new exhibit of a different form of visual artistic talent was completing installation at the Clarksville Customs House Museum. With the final paintings in place, the Customs House hosted a gala Hail and Farewell to celebrate their new exhibit, original oil landscape portraiture by Matthew Deric Gore, and bid a fond adieu to the Karsh Collection.

The reception allowed visitors to get a last view Yousef  Karsh’s famed Black and White Photographic Portraiture Collection, which was on loan from Franklin. The stunning and captivating  images of such public luminaries as Sir Winston Churchill, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Anne Keller, Muhammad Ali, Albert Einstein and Albert Schweitzer have delighted museum visitors.

In Light of Recent Discoveries

Joining the museum’s display is the collection of traditional realist painter Matthew Deric Gore. A Nashville talent, Matthew has traveled extensively and his work reflects the diversity of his world tour. His subjects are varied, from inanimate to animate, people and structures, young and old, mineral and vegetable, conventional and unorthodox, presented in muted yet vibrant colors that bring emotion and texture to their imagery. From a lone cat walking along an ancient Greek wall to a serene view of the Tiber River to Renaissance festival musicians playing their instruments, from ancient statues marred by graffiti to armed Italian policemen to a self portrait of the artist at home, these paintings share Gore’s outlook upon the world.

The Gore exhibit is part of a diverse selection of exhibits currently on display at the Customs House Museum, 200 South Second Street in Clarksville. The NAACP released its annual Congressional Legislative Report Card, which is an evaluation of the voting records of Congressional members on key NAACP agenda issues. The NAACP has graded the U.S. Congress on the civil rights agenda since 1914. The report card provides a non-partisan assessment of the first session of the 111th Congress, and is designed to provide NAACP members and the nation with insight into the general voting patterns of congressional representatives and state delegations.

According to the latest report card, 59% of Senators and 47% of House Members received an “A” by the NAACP, while helping to pass several historical acts or bills such as the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

However, there are many that have yet to show their commitment to fundamental civil and human rights. In fact, 29% of Senators and 34% of House Members received the failing grade of “F” on the report card.

Tennessee’s United States Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker both received a grade of F while Tennessee’s U.S. House of Representatives faired just a little bit better with just four out of nine members receiving a failing grade of F including Marsha Blackburn, Phil Roe, John J. Duncan Jr., and Zach Wamp.

The current facility, operating in a 164,000 square foot space in the Interstate 75 Industrial Park, builds automotive parts including gear shifters, parking brakes and lighting products. In 2001, SL Tennessee became the first Korean-owned automobile parts manufacturer in the Volunteer State when the Clinton facility opened.

The contract also calls for SL Tennessee to supply VW production in Puebla, Mexico.  Both shifters will be manufactured in Tennessee.  The award is SL’s first contract with the Volkswagen Group as Volkswagen expands its production presence in North America and identifies local supply opportunities.
