Bill Hilton Jr., Director of Hilton Pond Center of Piedmont Natural History and Operation RubyThroat, will give presentations throughout the day about the behavior and migration of the Ruby-throated hummingbird. He also will give up close demonstrations on how leg bands are attached. Banding is a way of identifying and tracking individual birds. If a hummingbird is recaptured at another study site along its migration route, the leg band number is recorded and added to a database.  Biologists can then look at all the data collected over the years for clues about the habits of these tiny birds and how to best meet their habitat needs.

In addition, the throttle can stick due to an improperly positioned fuel line and throttle cable, posing a sudden acceleration hazard.

Climbing Sticks: Muddy Outdoors is recalling 2009 Muddy Outdoors tree climbing sticks sold nationwide from July 2009 to April 2010. Bolts that secure the cam locs to the frame of these climbing sticks that retains the rope around the tree can break, allowing the cam locs to detach from the frame. This causes the retaining rope to detach and the climbing stick to release from the tree, posing a fall hazard.

The recalled climbing sticks are used for climbing a tree and include 2009 year Model 70301 – Muddy Outdoors climbing stick (a 20 inch single climbing stick) and 2009 year Model 70304 – Muddy Outdoors climbing stick (4 pack of 20-inch climbing sticks). The bicycle fork’s legs can separate from the fork crown and cause the rider to lose control, posing a fall hazard and risk of injury. This recall involves all 2010 Redline Conquest Cyclocross bicycles and ramesets. The bicycles and framesets were sold in yellow and black, and have aluminum frames and aluminum forks with aluminum steering tubes. “Redline” is printed on the bicycle frame. Wire Feed Welders: Star Asia USA LLC is recalling wire feed welders sold nationwide from October 2006 to March 2010. The wire welder’s torch does not have a cold contactor as erroneously stated on the packaging and instruction manual. Without this feature, the welder generates an electrical arc immediately upon contact with the welding material, posing a burn hazard.

The recall involves the Vaper 90 amp flux wire feed welders with model number 41181. “Vaper” and “90 amp flux wire welder” can be found on the product’s operation panel. The model number can be found on the top right hand corner of the package and on the first page of the users manual. PANJSHIR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Panjshir Governor Keramuddin Keram met with PRT Panjshir July 1 to discuss a project that could bring 35,000 new trees to the province by the end of the year.

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jeffrey Casada, Kentucky National Guard ADT leader with PRT Panjshir, and Jim Hoffman, U.S. Department of Agriculture advisor to PRT Panjshir, presented the governor with a slide show highlighting key elements of the Panjshir Valley Green Belts Project.

The ADT, in a joint venture with the PRT and provincial government line directors, have proposed a large-scale reforestation project. The purpose of the meeting was to bring the plan to the governor’s attention to obtain full consensus, Hoffman said.

“Decades of war have caused deforestation in the Panjshir Valley,” said Hoffman, a Boise, Idaho, native. “The loss of the tree cover is causing soil erosion, landslides and destabilization of the sides of the valley. Planting trees and other shrubs helps to stabilize soil and snowpack and will allow for continued normal hydrological functions of the Panjshir River drainage. In turn, it will have positive effects for the people and businesses downstream.”

During his presentation to the governor, Casada, a London, Ky. native, said the project will involve planting 5,000 seedlings in each of the six districts and one municipality. Each district would have two belts of 2,500 trees.

“Our goal is to start in October of this year and finish in November,” Casada said. “We’ll start in Paryan and move south to Shutol.

“We’re proposing hiring 10 day laborers per district for a total of 70 in the province,” Casada said.

According to the proposal, the Panjshir Director of Agriculture, Irrigation and Land and his staff would receive two days of training prior to the arrival of the trees. In addition, the 70 tree planters would receive one day of training. The tools purchased to use in the project will remain in the districts where they are used.

Five thousand Eco Bags are also part of the proposal. Casada said the Eco Bags are a form of new technology used in agriculture. He said each bag holds 28-30 days of water that slowly drips where the plants or trees need it. If used properly, the bags eliminate the need to water the trees by traditional standards.

Keram had many questions during the presentation. One concern he had was that the right trees would be planted for the right climates of the individual districts. Through an interpreter, he said projects like this have failed in the past, and he wanted a realistic assessment of the survival rate for the trees.

“Some will not survive the winter,” Casada said. “Our goal is for 70 percent of these trees to live.”

Near the conclusion of the meeting, Casada said, “This project will last 180 days or less. That’s six months to get the trees planted, watered and off to a good start. I’m asking your help to get the letters of support from the districts so we can submit this project.”

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Curtis Velasquez, PRT Panjshir commander and Abilene, Kan., native, told Keram that while it’s important to have his support for the project, it’s also important to have district and village leaders be a part of the plan for it to work in the long term.

“The Panjshir Valley Green Belts Project has many potential benefits,” Velasquez said. “Workers will get training and have jobs while the project is ongoing. Also, as discussed by our agricultural experts, this could reduce flooding and soil erosion, improve irrigation, provide electricity, support fisheries, recharge groundwater, and support forest resources,” Velasquez said.

Following a discussion after the presentation, Keram told the group that the project had his support. He said he would work with the line directors and local leaders to get their support as well. He concluded the meeting on a motivational and humorous note.

“According to this plan, give me a shovel and I’ll get started digging,” Keram said.

“It fits in with many elements of the Provincial Development Plan that deal with water,” Hoffman said. “They’re generated from the Afghan people in their PDP as individual projects, and they’re covered in the larger analysis of Task Force Wolverine and Regional Command-East.”

ANJSHIR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The Panjshir Beverage Industry Ltd. water bottling plant is currently producing 40,000-50,000 bottles of mineral water per day, and the company’s owner is looking to expand his Afghan business to include sales to the American military.

Army Chief Warrant Officer Peter Johnson, 72nd Medical Detachment Veterinary Services,  pre-audited Haaj Kateb Khalili’s bottling plant in the Khenj District of the Panjshir Valley.

Johnson said his pre-audit is just one step in the process of approving the water plant as a Department of Defense procurement facility. The whole inspection and certification process can take several weeks to months or even longer. Simply going through the process doesn’t mean automatic approval.

“This is just the beginning,” said Johnson. “We already have samples of the water at the veterinary lab in Europe. The outcome of those tests will determine how we move forward.

“Today, we’re doing a pre-audit,” Johnson continued. “I’ll assess the facility and point them in the right direction about what it takes to become an approved source. I’ll give them references as to how to be in compliance. In a couple of weeks, I’ll receive a tasking to set up an initial audit. At that meeting, I’ll pull more samples and continue the inspection.”

The plant is currently having a hard time producing as much water as they can sell, said Lal Mohammad, plant manager. However, within a couple of months production will double.

“Yes, we can make more very soon,” said Mohammad through an interpreter. “Our maximum can be 100,000 bottles per day. We purchased three more machines, and when they’re installed, we will be able to double our output.”

In addition to more water, the new machines mean more workers, said Mohammad. The plant has 60 workers now and will have 120 in a few months when the new equipment is installed.

There is no shortage of fresh spring water, according to Khalili, the plant’s owner and CEO. The water is piped in from a spring about 4,000 meters from the facility. It goes through a complex system of purification and testing before it gets bottled.

“We test the water every 15 minutes,” said Mohammad. “The lab chief who does the test has 11 years of experience in lab testing water. We want to make sure our water is always perfect.”

If the plant is able to work through the approval process, Curtis Rose, U.S. Agency for International Development field officer with the Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team, said the water company will be entitled to government contracts.

“It’s a tremendous business opportunity in Panjshir,” said Rose, a Newport Richey, Fla., native. “This is the first big business in Panjshir, and being an approved source could really increase the business and produce a lot of jobs. Plus, the water tastes great, and this is a state-of-the-art facility.”

Khalili said he is happy that the Panjshir PRT brought in the inspector for more than one reason.

“We’re looking forward to being an approved water source,” said Khalili through an interpreter. “I know (ISAF) focuses on unsecure places a lot. Panjshir is secure, so we don’t get as many projects as some other areas.

“Panjshir has great weather and very fresh water,” Khalili continued. “I was born here, and I want to make something for the valley. It’s important to serve the valley. My goal is also to help the security of Afghanistan and serve the people.”

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Curtis Velasquez, the Panjshir PRT commander, has worked with his USAID partners behind the scenes to make the pre-audit happen. Velasquez said it’s important for the PRT to work with their Afghan partners to promote business opportunities and jobs in the valley, and he sees potential with the water bottling plant.

“This is a really modern facility,” said Velasquez, an Abilene, Kan., native. “We have a great relationship with Panjshir now, and we would like to support the local economy by drinking the water should it pass the procurement process.”

During his pre-audit, Johnson went on a plant and laboratory tour with Ali Rezayi, plant quality control manager. Rezayi showed Johnson all of the equipment in the facility and talked about current testing and processing procedures. Johnson left Rezayi with multiple pages of paperwork and additional guidelines that must be met.

“It really depends on how the samples come back,” said Johnson. “They are probably a little overwhelmed right now because no one has held them to these standards before. It’s a process, and we’re here to help them work through it.”

Pending the lab results, Johnson will schedule his initial audit of the plant in the coming weeks.

Private First Class Nathaniel D. Garvin

Fort Campbell has announced the deaths of three soldiers in Afghanistan.

Private First Class Nathaniel D. Garvin died July 12 of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Garvin, 20, of Radcliff, Ky., was an armament, electrical and avionics systems repairer assigned to the 96th Aviation Support Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade. He entered the Army in August 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in June 2009.

Garvin’s awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal with arrowhead, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; NATO Medal; and Weapons Qualification: M4, expert.

Sergeant Shaun M. Mittler died July 10 of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit in Konar Province, Afghanistan.

Mittler, 32, of Austin, Texas, was an indirect fire infantryman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team. He entered the Army in December 1999 and arrived at Fort Campbell in May 2008.

Specialist Carlos J. Negron, 40, of Fort Myers, Fla.,died July 10 of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit at Konar Province, Afghanistan.

Negron, 40, of Fort Myers, Fla., was a combat medic assigned to the 426th Forward Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team. He entered the Army in June 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in March 2009.

Baseboard heaters: Marley Engineered Products is recalling Dayton Electric Baseboard Heaters sold exclusively at Grainger stores nationwide from December 2009 to March 2010. The baseboard heaters are labeled for 240 or 208 volt use. However, some of the heaters have an internal heater built for a maximum of 120 volts. If the heater is connected to a 240 or 208 volt electrical circuit as directed, the unit could catch fire. This recall involves Dayton 240/208 volt model 3UG82D electric baseboard heaters. The white, rectangular heaters are 30 inches long by 6 3/4 inches high by 2 7/8 inches deep. A nameplate on the bottom right side of the base has “Dayton Electric Mfg. Stadium Light Poles: Whitco Company LP is recalling Whitco Company LP poles 70 feet tall or higher sold nationwide from 2000 to 2005. The poles can fracture or crack and fall over, posing a risk of serious injury or death to patrons and bystanders from being hit or crushed. The poles range from 1 to 4 tons increasing the risk of death if the pole falls toward a crowded stadium or onto a building. This recall to inspect and repair involves Whitco Co. LP outdoor steel stadium light poles from about 70 to 135 feet and weigh from about 1 to 4 tons. The poles are constructed of steel with a galvanized coating and were manufactured between 2000-2005.The poles can be found at facilities such as recreational parks and fields, schools and outdoor stadiums. To reduce the risk of injury, Whitco Co. LP light poles should be inspected by an engineer or a Level II non-destructive testing technician immediately to identify cracking at or near the weld connecting the pole to the base plate flange.

Private First Class David A. Jefferson

A 101st Airborne Division soldier died July 2 when his dismounted patrol encountered an improvised explosive device in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Private First Class David A. Jefferson, 23, of Philadelphia was an Army Combat Medic assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. He entered the Army in July 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2009.

Jefferson’s awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon;  and Weapons Qualification: M4, expert.

Jefferson is survived by his wife, Darniece T. Melton-Jefferson and son, Ian of Philadelphia and father, James M. Lyles of Columbia, S.C.

A memorial ceremony will be held in Afghanistan.

The tournament, which is in its 33rd year, is sponsored by Kentucky Lake Bass Club, and is designed to develop the fishing skills of children and adults who are physically and/or mentally challenged. The event was originally for May but was postponed due to flooding.

Woodlands Nature Station 'Turtles & Kids'

LBL encourages visitors to celebrate nature with an up-close look at all sorts of creatures, especially those that are often under-appreciated. Cool & Crawly Critters Day will be at Woodlands Nature Station, Saturday, July 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The day’s events include games, crafts, entertainment, and lots of cool and crawly critters such as bugs, snakes, turtles, and more.  Throughout the day, scientists and naturalists who study these animals will be on hand to conduct programs and answer questions.

“The Nature Station will be buzzing with opportunities for children to learn first-hand about the benefits of critters that sometimes give us the creeps,” explained NS employee Carrie Szwed.  “Families will experience a full day of discovery!”

The Department of Defense has released the name of a 101st Airborne Division Soldier who died June 7 when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in the Dangam district, Kunar province, Afghanistan.

1st Sgt. Robert N. Barton II, 35, of Roxie, Miss., was an infantryman who entered the Army in October 1993 and arrived at Fort Campbell in June 2005.

1st Sgt. Eddie Turner, 41, of Fort Belvoir, Va., was an automated logistical specialist assigned to the 626th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. Turner entered the Army in January 1990 and arrived at Fort Campbell in November 2007.

Miller, died June 21 when an insurgent detonated a suicide vest next to a traffic control point outside of Lar Sholtan Village, Afghanistan. Both Soldiers were infantrymen assigned to Company C., 2nd Battalion 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team.

, 22, of Owasso, Okla. Looney joined the Army July 2007, and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2009.

SSG James Hunter

Staff Sgt. James P. Hunter, 25, of South Amherst, Ohio, was an army journalist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 502nd Infantry Regiment. He joined the Army in August 2003 and arrived at Fort Campbell in May 2007.

A 101st Airborne Division soldier died June 18 when his dismounted patrol encountered an improvised explosive device in the Zhari District, Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Pfc. Benjamin J. Park

Pfc. Benjamin J. Park, 25, of Fairfax Station, Va., was an infantryman assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. He joined the Army in August 2009 and arrived at Fort Campbell in January 2010.

Location of proposed quarry in Kentucky

A “Stop The Quarry Town Hall Meeting” will be held June 29 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Northeast Baptist Church, 3900 Trenton Road, according to Gretchen Daenell Stopthequarry organizer, Tylertown neighborhood representative and spokesperson.

This will be an informative meeting to help rally support and raise awareness. The meeting will provide area residents with a forum for posing questions about their concerns to stopthequarry representatives and other key speakers.

The communication module in the thermostat can overheat, posing a risk of fire hazard. During this weekend’s lane closures, workers will remove deteriorated concrete from the bridges that cross over Haywood Lane, Mill Creek, and Bell Road. Once the new concrete is poured, it must harden for approximately 18 hours. The bridge repairs are being completed as part of a $3.2 million dollar interstate resurfacing project that stretches from Haywood Lane to the Rutherford County line. The project is expected to be complete by the end of July.

Motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routing to avoid the area if at all possible. Highway Safety officers will be on site to provide traffic control and monitor speed compliance and safety precautions. TDOT will utilize its electronic display messaging boards and other warning devices to alert motorists of the  restricted traffic area. Motorists are cautioned to adhere to reduced speed limits in the congested area.

Over 50 members of small businesses, local government and non-profits attended the “Go Green, Make Green PAY!” Green Business Conference at the James E. Bruce Convention Center in Hopkinsville, KY. The conference, which was hosted by Kentucky State University’s Cooperative Extension Program in partnership with USDA Rural Development and MEDI of Western Kentucky, Inc., aimed to help businesses, local government, non-profits and individuals learn how to profit from the green economy.

Gae Broadwater of Kentucky State University kicked the conference off with a brief introduction on the “Green Business” ideal. “We want to offer resources and support to those that are starting or growing green businesses,” said Broadwater. “Of course we want to emphasis ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ but we also want you to learn how to profit.”

Donald J. Challman, Associate Director of University of Kentucky’s Center for Applied Energy Research, presented “Energy, Environment and Economics: The Triple Threat”; he also introduced Kentucky’s “25% by 2025″ plan to reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions. “The challenge is exploring carbon neutral energy sources economically and only when needed,” said Challman. “We need an affordable, clean, abundant energy source and there is no known source that meets these criteria at this time.” Challman emphasized the importance of a ‘trade off’ when it comes to researching and following through on alternative energies: “Unfortunately, you have to burn coal to get hydrogen; Kentucky is moving toward carbon neutral, electric power and synfuels.” said Challman.

Local business owners Rose Buchanan, Lovelle’s Orchards, and Sean Fay, Lady Bug Lane Pure-Produce, were eager to learn more Eco-friendly ways to run their already ‘green’ businesses. “We already practice several sustainable endeavors,” said Buchanan. “We can always be better at the orchard though.” Lovelle’s Orchards currently utilizes pigs for tilling; they hope to use chickens as natural insecticide and eventually produce their own ethanol.

Fay understands the financial hardship of starting a new ‘green business.’ “Everybody wants to save the planet but a lot of people don’t want to foot the bill.” Fay was utilizing the conference to find support for his hydroponic produce.

Along with over 10 presenters, John Janssen presented the keynote address. Janssen is the former Mayor of Greensburg, Kansas where he championed the decision to rebuild his community using environmentally friendly approaches after it was flattened by a tornado. The conference included a catered breakfast and lunch where all produce was supplied through local ‘green’ markets and vendors. Each participant received a Eco-friendly packet that included: a pen made of recycled wood, recycled pad of paper, a sustainable portfolio and a disc with files of every handout to prevent wasteful printing.

Kentucky State University hopes that the “Go Green, Make Green PAY!” conference can continue in the upcoming years. “There is such a need for information on the ‘go green’ ideal in our area,” said Ashlee Jackson of KSU. “Someone needs to be providing the information.”
