At 8 PM on Friday, September 27, six directors will meet with six casts to rehearse and stage a 10 minute play. The only problem? They have only 24 hours to produce it.
Show time starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 28 and as the saying goes, the show must go on.
Ricky Young, owner of the Fronkensteen Lounge, is teaming up with the APSU Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) to host the Redeye Ten Minute Play Festival, a 24 hour festival that will go up simultaneously in all four Time Zones. In its second yea,r the Redeye is a national event that produces plays by six playwrights in the format of a crazy theatre marathon. Half of the proceeds of the show go to the New Works Initiative, a fund that helps playwrights raise money to produce their work.
When Young was first asked by one of his colleagues to be the host for the Central Time Zone Redeye, he was honored.
“I was ecstatic,” Young says, “I submitted a play to it last year and it didn’t get in, now this year I get to host it. How often does that get to happen?” The called his friend, Zach Mcelroy, who is a member of the SDS, to see if they would cohost it. “Zach and I have worked together in theatre before and we always talked about working together again. So when this opportunity came up he was one of the first people I asked.”
In return for co-hosting the event, the SDS will receive a portion of the proceeds.
So what can you expect? Come see art happen right before your eyes as actors and directors undergo a theatrical experiment live in front of the audience. “What the audience is trying to help us answer is ‘can 6 plays happen successfully in 24 hours?’”
Young says “It’s community theatre at it’s purest, artists coming together to do the theatre that they love so that other artists can do theirs.” Ricky is asking for help from the community. “We are looking for about 20 actors to take the stage and make this crazy idea happen!” Young says, “and you had better act fast. The first 20 actors that email Fronkensteentheatre@gmail.com get in.” There is no audition. All you have to do is be available from 8 pm 9/27 through 10 pm 9/28, sign a waiver and release form at check-in, and be willing to go crazy for the arts. The Fronkenstein Lounge is located at 131 Riverview Drive in Clarksville.
