Many of the melodies of the Faure Requiem are well known and popular, having been recorded by Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman and Charlotte Church, among others. Of the many settings of the Requiem, Faure’s is probably the most widely loved. In comparison with the large-scale masterpieces of Verdi, Brahms and Berlioz, Faure’s setting seems gentle and unassuming, yet it is this very quality of understatement which contributes so eloquently to the work’s universal appeal.
The Faure Requiem departs significantly form the standard liturgical text. He included two new sections, the lyrical Pie Jesu and the transcendent In Paradisum, with its soaring vocal line and murmuring harp accompaniment. Leaving out the Dies Irae and the Tuba Mirum, the prevailing mood is one of serenity and peacefulness. The work has been aptly described as a Requiem without the Last Judgment. It is impossible to not be moved by the ethereal beauty of this humble masterpiece.
Join us as the Choir of Grace Lutheran Church and orchestra perform this profound work on Sunday March 21, at 4:00 p.m. There is no admission charge and parking is free. For more information or directions to Grace Lutheran Church at 2041 Madison St., please call the church office at 931-647-6750.
