The Cumberland River Center is decked out
The opening celebration of the 11th annual Christmas On The Cumberland festive holiday lights display saw special guests come to the city. New additions have increased the total lights count by several hundreds. Although a lite drizzle at first threatened to hamper the event, the rains were held at bay and fun triumphed.
With hundreds more lights strewn all along the Cumberland River and Riverside Drive down to the railroad trestle before Crossland Avenue and new lighting displays all around the historic downtown district, this year’s holiday lights display is more brilliant than ever. The blanketing of decorative lighting extends to North Second Street, Public Square, including City Hall, both Franklin and Legion Streets, Strawberry Alley and the County Courts Square, to include the Old County Court House. Holiday shrubbery has been added to several of these thoroughfares to enhance the festive spirit and look of the city.

Clarksville turned in high numbers to enjoy the kick-off to its downtown holiday season. Family, friends and visitors from miles around were on hand to partake of this annual holiday tradition. In recognition of our annual holiday lights extravaganza, two special guests visited our city to help celebrate the opening of the 11th Christmas On The Cumberland. Channel 4-WSMV-TV’s Snow Bird and Opryland Holiday On Ice’s Charlie Brown greeted visitors to the MacGregor Park Pavillion and posed for pictures with eager youngsters of all ages. These visitors were shown a hearty and warm Clarksville welcome from their many eager fans.
Clarksville Mayor John E. Piper acknowledged the extra effort and dedication of the Parks and Recreation Department workers who are responsible for installing this year’s lights not only at MacGregor Park and The Riverwalk, but also along Riverside Drive, Public Square, Legion and Franklin Streets and Strawberry Alley. They also installed the holiday holly shrubbery that now adorns our downtown district, complete with lights. Thanks to their due diligence, the city’s holiday decorations are truly a festival of lights.
Christmas On The Cumberland will be on parade through January 1st. Be sure you get out and enjoy the sights.
